Dolmen goddess - Längeneichstädt
Dolmen goddess - Längeneichstädt
This menhir was discovered as a captone of a megalitic chamber, thus, it was reused more than 4500 years ago. This statue is 1.76m high and consists of yellow-greyish sand stone. The lower end is crafted very roughly. The tip is of oval shape, smoothed, and ornamented with numerous grooves. Clearly the stiled oval face of the Dolmen goddess is visible, with three lines and two eyes. (Another goddess was found in the Züschen grave.) Below that, am male axe symbol is shown.
The monument itself looks very phallic even with the tip hole. Signs of frequent touching of the stone are clear. The wishes for fruitfulness for humans, animals and acriculture are manifested.
The stone was discovered 1987, a replica was set up in place, was broken, repaired, then stolen. Now a steel-concrete bond replica is dug very deep into the earth.
These standing stones were erected by prehistoric cultures. Some must have been transported over far distances. They were used for cultural and structuring purposes. For some, it can be understood from astro archeologic view point, that there are calendar events, as you may see the sun rise in line with a prominent hill on aequinoxes and the longest and shortest days in the year, if you stand beside such a calendar stone. As nature was understood rather spiritual in these years, these locations marked were also viewed as sacred. Modern chiselers also are busy leaving ther personal marks on i.e. Alsbach, which is also a good example for a calendar stone.
During history and the middle ages, many were used as landmarks. Most elderly inhabitants know these smaller stones. They are protected by law.
