This large erratic block lies aside of Schloß Ziegelberg in Mettlach. It's name may be translated 'grand gods stone'. The stone is 3m high, 5m wide and 4m deep. The surface is smooth, and crafted with tools. The backside is covered with moss, but some holes of hand size are visible. There are significant grooves. The marks are considered prehistorical except from some signs of christianization.
As Schloß Ziegelberg hosted a kindergarten for a while, sliding kiddies speeded up the erosion of the marks.
From Scandinavia in the Würm ice age much coarse boulder was shifted into northern Germany. Later on, many of them became dolmens and passage graves. Even more have been utilized for modern street building. I have collected some of the really big and well known ones to show them here. Whether those erratic blocks have had cult status, is difficult to examine. The southern German standing stones are easier to identify, because they are much more rare, or the original locations are astronomically extraordinary.
