Ketzerstein Liebenscheid
Ketzerstein Liebenscheid

This natural monument arose during the Tertiary as a eroded relict of the basalt cover on the Westerwald. Here, magnetic anomalities can be found, as in the Magnet stones of the Frankenstein.
The name goes back to a middle age boarder, named Cat -> "Katzenstein", to the Liberty (free town) Liebenscheid. It can easily confused with a "Ketzer" which would mean "Heretic". Also a communality to the "Ketzerbach" and with the deserted village Katzhausen can be assumed. Translated after the info plate by Westerwald-Society

Rock formations do create strong places. They have been used for rituals, they have given shelter, some were used for meetings. Eroded sand stone and basalt rock forms large parts of middle Germany. In limestone sometimes there exist stalactite caves. When they collapse, the relicts are impressive.
