Grand dolmen Stöckheim
Grand dolmen Stöckheim

The very impressive northern capstone (22 tonnes, 4.5 m long, 2.9 m wide and 0.8 m thick!) is marked with over 80 drilled cups all over. The largest cup mark is about 7 cm diameter and is 2 cm deep. At the south-western corner, the stone has a groove that passes halfway around it. This groove is 1.53m long, has triangular profile and is 1 cm deep, 3cm wide.
This is a very good preserved megalithic tomb. The chamber is oriented from North to South, and consists of seven pairs of wall stones. Its inner dimension is 9.2 x 2.2 to 1.8 m on ground, trapezoid shaped, and about 1 m high. Height is maximum in the North. The wall stones are smaller in the southern part and the capstones also get smaller. Most of the enclosing circle is missing.

Topic of this tour are cups - small artificial holes picked in the surface and are of prehistoric origin. Unfortunately, very little is known about these artifacts. In Bunsoh I cannot imagine, that the marks were made after completion of the grave mound. Probably, they had been there before the graves were constructed? Anyhow, they really look the same, no matter if there are few or many cups.
This is a compilation of megaliths elsewhere within my site.
